About the Film

Filmmaker Gu Tao spent the last several years exploring life among the Ewenkis, an ethnic minority in north-eastern China, whose fate suddenly changed when the government introduced a ban on hunting and forcefully displaced the group to a reservation in 2003. Since then, most Ewenkis have turned to the bottle. This is also true for the protagonist of this both heartbreaking and absurdly funny film. He drinks, wobbles, shouts and fights, so that we as spectators feel the punches on our own bodies. Right until his mother takes matters into her own hands, finds him a wife and puts him on a plane heading south!

About the Director

Gu Tao is an award-winning documentary director and graduate of the Art Institute of Inner Mongolia. He launched his documentary career in 2003. Over the years, Gu Tao has completed many documentaries on the living condition of ethnic minorities in Northern China in contemporary China, which include Aoluguya, Aoluguya, The Naked Life of Qin Yongjian, North of North, A Time Past, and The Opaque God (co-director).
